Why does task manager always take so long to open? 90% of the time it’s used to close a program that’s clearly not working properly (I’m assuming this is the case for most people, not just me). Then why does it take like 5 minutes to open? Even when you don’t have a program that not working right.
Also I’m on Windows 8.0. And tbh I don’t really remember how long it took on other OSs. I don’t think it was quite this bad on 7, but I may not recall correctly.

Every Windows 8-10 machine I’ve worked on begrudgingly opens Task Manager every time. Fresh out of the box machines, modified, whichever. So this isn’t much help.
Long live 2k, XP and 7.

My Win10 machine just launched task manager in less than three seconds.

Because most of the time, when you’re attempting to open Task Manager, you’re trying to open it because there is a program eating your resources and killing the program / machine
Your computer can’t quickly open something without the resources to do so :\

I would suspect your disk usage is high because of your swap file. You probably have a middling amount of RAM and Windows 8 makes liberal use of the memory swap file. The drive your OS is on is probably a little old and of the spinning variety. When you open task manager the system reads everything stored in memory and some of that information happens to be on your hard drive. This is all a guess since the only thing I know about your PC is that it runs Windows 8.

Mine’s not too bad.
When the video goes black is me hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and bringing up the Task Manager that way. Yes I’m a dork.

It’s more or less instant for me on 7 unless there’s a major system instability occurring.

I do have a 750 gig spinning hardrive, so I guess that probably slows it down. I’ve looked into upgrading to an SSD. But I’m just not sure the cost and risk of converting it myself would be worth it.

At this point I’m really starting to regret not installing Windows 7 on my laptop :(

Alternatively you could try the Resource Monitor.

Ahh, I ‘member Windows 8.0. It sucks. Get rid of it. Formatting and reinstalling Windows (a better one) is easier than it’s ever been. Swapping to an SSD is also easy if you wanna go down that route.

because something is dicking up your computer and you want to kill it with fire. the computer is still dicked up until you do kill it

It always opened within 10-15 seconds on Win8 I think.
Is your PC/laptop running or performing slow? I’d go into the BIOS and make sure the HDD is able to operate at SATA III 6.0Gb/s speed. In my Toshiba laptop from 2012 it has an option in the BIOS to turn the speed down to SATA II 3.0Gb/s or SATA I 1.5Gb/s for battery life.
